The New World of Travel

Think back to your family vacations as a kid with "Are we there, yet?" car rides, Holiday Inn hotel stays, airbrushed t-shirts and plastic snow globes.

Compare that to the trips that you take now as a family with devices, apps, iTunes, noise cancelling headphones and Instagram memories.

Like everything, travel has changed a lot in our lifetime and it continues to evolve not only because of technology, but also because of our changing desires and interests.

Technology

Instead of using books and maps when we travel, we now rely more heavily on online resources, traveler reviews, apps and GPS on our smartphones. Do-it-yourself travel is now much more accessible if you're able and willing to invest the time.

Lodging

Alternate lodging options like vacation rentals through Airbnb or VRBO, glamping in yurts, RV rentals and boutique hotels have gained in popularity over traditional hotel chains.

Food and Souvenirs

In general, we now have a desire to eat and shop locally. This applies even more so when traveling to a new city. As a child, I'd be willing to bet that most of your vacation meals were eaten at a chain restaurant. We now want to experience local flavors and buy locally-made souvenirs like art and jewelry as a reminder of our trips.

Destinations

Technology has made the world more available to us which means we can travel further, faster with few places in the world being off-limits. Even cities within the United States that used to take a full day of flying, can now be accessed in just hours. This makes it easier for us to hand-pick our destinations and even travel during off-seasons to avoid crowds and save money.

Desires and Goals

Vacation trends are leaning more toward authentic travel experiences that involve exploring new places. Bucket list trips used to be reserved for retirees who were healthy and wealthy enough to take them, but are now accessible for everyone. Younger professionals and families are spending less on material items and more on unique and immersive experiences to get off the beaten path or get to know the heart of a city. People are also taking experiential trips specifically built specifically around passions in their lives like food, sports or music.
